KING CAKE QUEST

KING CAKE from GAMBINO’S BAKERY looks amazing!

I stumbled across a feature on KING CAKES in a very strange place. I’ve heard of these before, but I’ve known them as baby cakes— a cake with a little plastic baby baked inside it.

But these— especially the ones from GAMBINO’S BAKERY— look incredible. I love the colored sugar and the icing, the cake can be ordered with various ingredients including cinnamon, cream cheese, custard or strawberry. Strawberry cream cheese sounds pretty great.

The legend is if you get the baby in your piece you have the pleasure of getting the KING CAKE next year. This is connected to Mardi Gras somehow— Mardi Gras and I are two ships that shall never pass in the night— I don’t like drunk obnoxious behavior and my idea of fun is literally throwing on a black tie and going to a classical concert— followed by a grand coffee service hopefully serving KING CAKE.

I was hoping to find something local, but up here in the Northeast we are pretty stodgy about traditions from the South. If I can’t find one at any of the dozen high end bakeries we have around us I’ll order one from Gambino’s and I’ll certainly give a review of it here.

EDIT: I ordered one from Gambino’s and have it scheduled to be delivered the last week of February. We’re going to have some people over and start a King Cake’s Tradition at the end of February. I ended up order the Apple Filled one to please some critics and I’ll let you know how it goes.
