I find ear protection very uncomfortable— either they are too tight or too hot or they dig into the top of my head. I need them for the Gun Range so I’ve tried multiple different kinds. I have two sets of the padded kind and while both of them work the squeezing of my head causes comfort issues if I’m there for long periods of time.
I have another set that looks like the top half of a doctor’s stethoscope— the problem with those is you have to jam them so hard into your ears that your canal starts to hurt and I’ve got a pair of the soft squishy kind that are disposable but I think those don’t actually work at all. My ears were killing me after an afternoon with some friends shooting.
At a gun show I was at in early spring there was a table set up selling custom ear plugs. I don’t know how they molded them to your ears but I’ve seen other shooters wearing them. I should have talked to them and since the next gun show isn’t until the Fall and I can’t get my time machine to work I had to find an alternative so I turned to Amazon and used customer reviews to find the best rated pair— and that was a set put out by Decibullz. They arrive in a little package and they are as you see them in the picture. They say L and R on them for some reason I can’t understand because once you start the process of molding them the letters wear right off.
You place them in boiling water for five minutes then you remove them and after allowing to cool for a few seconds you start to squish and mold them and then you jam them into your ear and get them to fit tight by constantly pushing and tweaking. If you mess up you can repeat the process, but after three tries I got mine the way I want them and I couldn’t believe how comfortable they were. I was sure they wouldn’t actually block out sound but when I took them to the range they were great— better than the over the head type.
Some people take these and mold them around their earphones so they’ll stay in— there are all kinds of things you can do. I may get a second pair and do the earphone thing so I can listen to music at the range.
