Because my car was made in the last Century it came equipped with a Satellite Radio. It’s a great invention if you have to drive across the country because you don’t have to keep tuning into different stations and worry about losing signals. I don’t drive across the country all to often so when my free first year ended I didn’t renew.
But they don’t want me to leave so they send me an offer — $4.99 a month which is apparently less than whatever their regular price.
I’m still not interested. While I had the service I often listened to the Old Time Radio station on channel 148 and that was pretty cool but to be honest I’m not even in the car enough to justify the $5 a month. Sure $5 a month is not much but it all adds up. That’s like $900 a year (approximately, my math might be off).
When that OTR station is playing something I don’t like I still have to scroll through the stations, and now instead of the 9 or 10 stations I’d get from my antenna I have something like 200 channels with nothing I want to listen to.
So I decided to say goodbye.
But they are relentless. I get at LEAST four emails a week and probably three postcards a week each time with the line YOU WON’T BE ABLE TO PASS THIS ONE UP!
And sure enough the offer is $4.99 a month. Now I have a friend who called them and he got $2 a month for life— that’s a pretty good deal but even still I’m not sure that $24 (see I can do math) might be better spent elsewhere.
A couple of times a year they do a FREE PREVIEW so I tune in again if I’m reminded of it, then consider signing up again but after a day or two I’m annoyed by the DJs they claim not to have, the advertisements that they still have despite paying for the service and the lack of anything I really care about to listen to.
Like that obnoxious guy in high school who keeps asking out the prom queen even though he has zero chance and his strategy is to just wear her down, they keep coming back with the same completely untempting offer.
It seems to me if they put some of their marketing money into just lowering the cost of the service they might get more subscribers.
Hey look at that— January is almost over— (unless I’ve screwed up and rescheduled this thing) now we just have to get through the snowiest month of the year before we get shocked to still get snow in March!
EDIT: Ha! I DID reschedule this, multiple times! It’s Spring now, yay!!
Since switching to Virgin Mobile with unlimited streaming I just use Pandora for my radio station. It’s FREE.
