Did an "old fashioned" one day comic con in Concord NH with #2 and #3 son for Superworld Comics. Ted, who runs SW, is an old friend and #2 son works for him full time. Ted was taking a much deserved vacation so #3 son and I filled in. We drove up Friday night to set up the show and then stayed at a nearby hotel.
It's an Old Fashioned show (that's how it was billed) which simply means it didn't have TV or movie stars as guests and featured only comic books. I know that probably sounds odd to people who don't know that much about these things but they've become insane media events with celebrities who have very little to do with comics (if at all).
As far as I know, the only BIG old style comic cons are Emerald City Con in Seattle and Heroes Con in Charlotte North Carolina. I've never been to ECC but I've been a guest at Heroes several times and I think it's a great show.
Unusual too that it was a one day show-- most cons are at least two days and several are 3-4 days while a few like San Diego Comic Con (the biggest of the shows) is 5-6 days with previews days factored in. Those bigger shows can get attendance numbers of up to 180,000 people. You read that right. More people than live in Providence Rhode Island can attend one of these big shows.
This was a small show and I have no idea how to estimate the crowd but if I had to hazard a guess I'd say about 800-1200 people. That's not bad for a first time show.
There were some great comics on the show floor ranging from the 1940s up to today. I picked up a few things myself including a vintage 70s Popeye puppet that was pretty cool. A book which reprints the HULK Magazines that were published also in the 70s in the UK. It's hard to imagine that one day something like this would be available in reprint form.
#2 son also got me a really old Popeye comic that is a nice match for the puppet and I picked up the Michael Cho variant cover of Action Comics #1000 that came out last month.
All in all a good show that was fun and family friendly. Hopeing to do the show again next year.
