When my good friend Paul Ryan passed away last year I was tasked with finishing the last of his work on THE PHANTOM which I did under his name so that there wouldn't be a gap in unfinished work, Paul was a constant professional so there was very little to finish but hopefully I honored him with those last few.
Mike Manley is an artist I've always liked and I was happy to hear he was taking the gig from King Features but I'd not seen any of the strips since it was just too painful to look at them. But time heals all and I caught up with what Mike did and it's really great stuff.
It's not easy working in a daily strip format-- it's constrictive beyond imagination because you have a single rectangle and editorial dictates that you often remind readers of what happened yesterday in case they missed it so it makes for some painful narratives from time to time as sequences that would be done in a few panels in comics are stretched out over a few more days in strips to ensure more readers see important information.
But anyway, back to Mike, I've added his blog to my list of places I check out so feel free to take a look. Mike is not only a talented artist he also is a teacher and one who edits the terrific DRAW! Magazine for my good friends over at TwoMorrows Publishing.
