16- It's Time To Act Like Grown Ups, Even To Our Children. Got an adult child that's moved back home after college, or graduated high school and is trying to "figure things out"? They need to pay rent. They need to learn that living in the world comes at a cost, getting all of the perks of being an adult they have wanted for so long have a cost. I hope, first of all, that if they did go to college you made sure they paid for at least some of it. Because otherwise you're not raising an adult, you're raising an overgrown dependent.
The sooner they learn responsibility the sooner they can contribute to society and that as parents should be your ONLY goal.
17- The Most Fearful Words in the English Language are; "I'm from the Government and I'm here to help". Ronald Reagan was right when he said that thirty years ago and it's true today. The Government works for us, not the other way around. What the government tries to "fix" only ends up worse.
School lunches? Government steps in. Kids are fat.
Affirmative Action? Blacks get the most "help" from the government over any other demographic and they also make up the vast majority of the poor in this country. You know which group gets the least? Asians. How are they doing? Yup. That's my point.
One need only sit in the bastion of human waste known as The RMV to experience first hand bureaucracy in action. Think about that when your number is 456 and they just called 3.
18- Drugs are bad, so is Alcohol. Enforce the laws and the problems go away. Get three DUI's? You need to serve jail time. These drug programs the government is putting into place are failing (no surprise see #17), and eliminating SHAME is the wrong way to go. Drug Addict? You should be ashamed of yourself. Drunk in public? Ditto. Coddling doesn't work. People make choices. They often make bad choices, but they need to be held accountable for those choices.
Do yourself a favor-- go to your App Store on your phone and download 5-0 Radio-- it's free. Then scroll through and find the feed for the nearest big city and listen for a while. I don't care if you live in the suburbs. If a big city is less than 15 miles away you are not immune. Listen for four hours and I guarantee you'll hear at least six calls for people overdosing. Pot is a gateway drug. Two recent studies showed that NOT ONE person who was abusing hard drugs skipped Pot. Not one. If you voted to legalize Marijuana in your state shame on you.
19- Focus on What You Can Control. Everyone has a number of things they are concerned about. There are only so many things you can actually control. Take a look at this chart;
You're wasting your time on anything in the Concern circle, focus on the Control circle.
20- The Best Bond Movies Are... From Monday-- got an email asking so here's my opinion. Connery is the best James Bond. If you approach from the thinking of today you're going to watch them in order which is Dr No, From Russia With Love, Goldfinger, Thunderball, You Only Live Twice, On Her Majesty's Secret Service and Diamonds are Forever. But that's not how I would watch them. Because I like to watch from best to worst and I see them like this;
GOLDFINGER (1964)- This is the best Bond film. It has a lot of the stuff we like about Bond. Connery has figured out what he's doing by this one and it's good from start to finish.
THUNDERBALL (1965) - It's the biggest Bond and it's got a lot going for it.
FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE (1963) - The second Bond movie is probably one of the more serious thrillers in the run. Not as much goofy spy stuff in it as the later ones.
DOCTOR NO (1962) - The First Bond movie is still good. It's a lot more of a straight action film but Connery is still figuring out who 007 is.
ONE HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE (1969) - This one needs an asterik. Sean Connery is not in this one, he was taking a break from the movies. George Lazenby is no Sean Connery but he's better than Pierce Brosnan and the later Roger Moore Bond's. If they had filmed this one in 1965 with Connery I suspect it would be Number One on the list. Watch it and pretend Connery is in it. For the record, if Connery was in it I don't think it would have worked, he was getting too old for the part.
YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE (1967) - James Bond in Japan. Connery is starting to look a little tired and this would be his last James Bond in the series except when they talked him to come back after OHMSS. It's good, but Connery makes a ridiculous looking Japanese in one scene where they dress him that way but it's still a good one.
DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER (1971)- In 1971 being 41 meant you looked like you were 61 because Connery is paunchy, his Toupee looks lousy and he just doesn't convince you he's James Bond anymore. It's amazing to fast forward to today and see that Danny Craig is around 50 and he's in better shape than Connery was in his prime. This one still has some fun stuff in it including a pair of Homosexual Killers who will either cause your PC Meter to explode or you'll remember things were different in 1971.
