Patriots Day is celebrated in Massachusetts today-- we are the birthplace of the Republic, the place where the shot was fired that was heard around the world.
Like true Patriots we should seize our lives and live them to the fullest, don't let fear, lack of success, anxiety or worry stop you. All week I'm going to be highlighting some suggestions. Many of these are from JD Roth who has the great website getrichslowly.org
1- Whether you think you can or you can't, you're right. Henry Ford said that and he was right. If you don't get behind whatever you want to accomplish fully then you will fail. Another great quote comes from General Norman Schwarzkopf: "You are the Thunder and the Lightning of Desert Storm." Make your goal your own personal Desert Storm and then deliver on it.
2- Your Health is Everything. The good news is the human body is a remarkable machine, and it can recover from nearly anything we do to it. Carrying too many pounds? Set yourself a workable goal; I don't like dieting because when you deny yourself something it can lead to binge eating. Try smaller plates. Try setting the rule of NO SECONDS. Try a snack rule where you put whatever 1 or 2 snacks you're going to eat for the day in a large ziplock baggie the night before. Decide a time for snacking, mine is 4pm with my afternoon coffee and that is the only time you snack.
If you smoke, STOP. That should be a priority over everything else. You'll save money and renew your health quickly. Find a method that works for you and make it happen.
3- Don't Play The Lottery. This seems like such a simple one for me. Lotteries are a tax on stupidity because your chances of winning are extremely slim. If you're spending more than $4 a week on the Lottery (and you should be keeping track) you need to cut back. I happen to think $4 is too much but I know some people like it.
Me? I don't play. I've bought about ten scratch tickets in my whole life and three times I won at least $500. You'd think that would have hooked me right? Nope. I used to sell Lottery Tickets-- I see how many are losers. I just have good luck.
4- Get Happy. A positive outlook in even the most bleak situation will have remarkable results. You can always find a silver lining in any situation, I don't care what it is. Monday's for some reason are a struggle for me. I hate them. I consider the week to run Monday thru Saturday. Sunday is a bonus day that doesn't count. It neither ends the week nor does it begin the week, it's a day to spend with family, to run errands, to sit and read, to do some landscaping. It exists in a vacuum.
Monday's come in like a battering ram sometimes. If I find myself in a poor mood I make sure I put on songs I like, watch movies I like, in other words find those things that make you happy and do them-- even if they are the last thing you feel like doing. It'll help you overcome these negative feelings.
5- Sean Connery is the only James Bond, William Shatner is the only Captain Kirk. James Bond is as much a product of the 60s as The Beatles are. He should be wearing a skinny tie and driving 60s era cars. The producers of the current films know this and even gave Danny Craig Connery's old car to use. Ditto Captain Kirk. You can have whover they're trying to shoe horn into the role. For some characters and some actors there is only one.
For the record, there are only TWO Star Wars films too-- the ones from 1977 and 1980. Everything else is drek. Don't waste your time with drek.
