I'm the world's worst Sci Fi fan-- I don't like the vast majority of the genre because it's usually made up of cheap looking sets, silly alien designs, bad over acting, ridiculous plots and the second they insert a word to substitute an existing word just to make it seem "spacey" I'm taken out of it.
Why would the word "Frak" become part of a language that is otherwise exactly the same as the one we have now?
In terms of the stuff I like sci fi wise, the original two STAR WARS movies are on that list, the first two PLANET OF THE APES, the original movie THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD, so is the Original Star Trek TV Show and LOST IN SPACE-- I can hear the cries of the faithful at these choices. I've tried Doctor Who, I've tried Star Trek The Next Generation, I've tried a lot of what is considered good sci fi and have found it boring, or overacted, or with cheap sets or all three.
I like the old Star Trek because William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy and DeForest Kelley had a great chemistry. I also like the bright colors, I'm a simple guy. The original Planet of the Apes I dig because of the Ape Makeup and I just like apes. Lost In Space is a trip. It's fun and I like the characters in it.
Star Wars? I saw the first movie in 1977 FORTY FOUR times. I was an eleven year old boy who was able to go to the movies by himself and STAR WARS opened around Memorial Day and played through the entire summer of 1977 at White City Cinemas. We'd arrange rides and sit and watch that thing over and over again.
My favorite character was Darth Vader, hands down. If you went back in time and told that dopey kid sitting in the audience that someday you'd meet the guy playing Vader and have a conversation with him he would have fallen dead out of his seat. Maybe we shouldn't do that.
After Vader I liked Luke, I find that hard to comprehend today because now I can barely stand his whiney attitude, but I can't dispute the facts of the case. Today it's Ben, but that might be character identification more than anything else.
I had a conversation with a friend who should know better and he referred to the original film as A NEW HOPE.
I hate to break it to you Charlie, but I was sitting in that audience-- it didn't say A NEW HOPE in the credits. It said "Star Wars".
I also like THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, it's a darker film, it's a not as good as the first film film, it's more a middle part of a story while the first one is a complete story. But I like it. I don't like the spoiler reveal, it seems forced (no pun) and un-needed. It also is too Hollywood for me. Like making the pre-clown Joker be the killer of Bruce Wayne's parents-- too coincidental.
RETURN OF THE JEDI? It starts out pretty good. The first 10-15 minutes set up the potential to be the best movie in the trilogy and then The Ewoks come skipping out and it all shoots straight to hell.
I know there have been six other movies besides these, none of them can stand with the first two. Most are just rehashes with a more diverse cast. Good for you if you like them.
Like Doctor Who, you can have 'em. Speaking of Doctor Who, we were guests at a convention two years ago and invited to a ViP dinner. We sat with six or seven other people and one of them was this animated guy in a bowtie. I leaned in to the person on my left and asked who that was.
"Him? He's Doctor Who."
