After deciding that leaving long before the sun comes up on the morning of the 5th was a terrible idea we opted to book a hotel in New Haven for Thursday night. Number Three son would be with us so we looked for something that had either a second bed or a pull out couch.
We’d designed and ordered a new banner and that was slated to be delivered to the hotel of the SuperWorld Comics Team on the Wednesday before we arrived, so we had our fingers crossed that it would happen without incident.
New Haven is a great little town, if you’ve never been you should check it out. The Yale Campus is really beautiful and if you can get down there in the Fall much the better with the amazing colors. There are some nifty little things down there including Worcester Street which features many amazing Pizza Restaurants, some of the best in the world.
Unfortunately Yale was having some kind of event that weekend so finding a hotel was extremely difficult. We usually stay at the George Street Hotel— now known as the New Haven Hotel but that was booked. We’ve also stayed at the Omni but that place can be really loud with a bunch of bars and college age restaurants directly across the street.
The first hotel we found and booked (and yes I said First) was in very nearby West Haven, and let me warn you, West Haven is a very sketchy area. There is a lot of drugs and a lot of crime (the two go hand in hand) and there’s a reason why you can find a room for $135 when everywhere else it’s $250. Thankfully Veronica checked some reviews and they hit close to home. One said it was a crack den, the other said they had a hard time sleeping because of the hookers coming in and out all through the night.
So we cancelled that one and found another.
This second one was right next door to the IKEA in town and we’d stayed there once before years ago when we likewise couldn’t find a room in town, and it was fine but its also loud being next to a highway and the reviews said it had gone down hill over the last few years so we cancelled that one too and found a nice spot at the New Haven Village— which is a series of sort of condos made into efficiencies. It was also less than 4 minutes from the train station so we were good to go.
On Wednesday afternoon we went to the gun range and got the text that our banner had arrived safely and soundly at the SuperWorld Hotel in NYC so one hurdle down countless more to go.
Next, the actual trip starts...
