Will Eisner's comic strip THE SPIRIT was actually a short comic book that was inserted into Sunday newspapers across the country that ran from 1940 until the early 50s. Because it was intended for newspapers it could be aimed at an older audience than your typical comic book of the time.
Eisner told more story in those eight page segments than most artists and writers today can do in 100.
In 1987 Eisner was a consulting writer on a proposed TV Series starring Sam Jones (Flash Gordon in the 1980 film) as his masked detective character. The film was done with an eye on the camp style of the 60s Batman TV Series but it was still head and shoulders above the Frank Miller big budget film of a few years ago.
It's recently been released by Warner Archives.
